Tarplee Helped Indianapolis for Decades through A Variety of Civic Improvements
INDIANAPOLIS, IN hApril 28, 2006) -- Marge Tarplee, one of Indianapolis's true humanitarians with leadership through the community for decades, has been named the honorary local chairperson for the 25th annual CARA Charities Indianapolis 500 Fashion Show set for Thursday, May 25, at the Indianapolis Downtown Westin.
Tarplee, a three-time winner of the state of Indiana's highest award, the Sagamore of the Wabash, will join CARA Charities founder Betty Rutherford as co-chairpersons for the Silver Anniversary edition of one of the city's biggest social events, the Indy 500 Fashion Show.
Tarplee has served as an Indianapolis civic leader since the 1970s including president of the 500 Festival in 1981 (the year that CARA Charities was founded), Central Newspapers Foundation, News Scholarship Board and Executive Women International. In 1993, the Marjorie C. Tarplee Excellence Award was established in honor of her 28 years of leadership in the local chapter of the Executive Women International.
In addition, Tarplee currently serves on eight boards of directors including Methodist Hospital Health Foundation, Indiana University School of Nursing, Rotary Club of Indianapolis, the Women's Fund, the 500 Festival Foundation and the Marge Tarplee Downtown Beautification Fund, a grant titled in her name.
Tarplee also chaired the campaign to raise $1.7 million for the lighting of the "World's Largest Christmas Tree" with light strands on the Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument in downtown Indianapolis. Tarplee has been named Indianapolis' "Martha Stewart" for her efforts.
"I have been a supporter of CARA Charities and the Indy 500 Fashion Show and I want to thank everyone for being named an honorary chairperson with Betty Rutherford," said Tarplee. "I looked forward to being involved in this year's CARA production. The Indy 500 Fashion Show is always one of the highlights for the month of May in Indianapolis." Both Tarplee and Rutherford have helped the CARA event become one of the biggest social events in the month of May in Indianapolis with more than a thousand attendees and Indy 500 drivers, celebrities and local dignitaries walking the Westin runway.
"Marge Tarplee has been a leader in the Indianapolis area for many years and I feel privileged to have her as a co-chairperson in the 25th edition of the CARA Charities Indy 500 Fashion Show," said Rutherford. "Marge was the president of the 500 Festival back when we started CARA Charities. She has given to a wide variety of important Indianapolis institutions including corporate, civic, not-for-profit and philanthropic worlds. It is an honor to have her part of the Silver Anniversary show." That first fashion show was held on May 25, 1982 and started a tradition that has now grown into an annual showcase of fashion, food, fun and fund raising.
Portions of the fund developed from the CARA Indy 500 fashion shows have gone to the CARA/Shirley Bettenhausen Children's Fund at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. The Bettenhausen fund helped build a two-story child recreation area in the hospital atrium as well as providing for holiday parties and gifts for children.
The 25th annual fashion affair set for the Thursday prior to the 90th running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race will open with a social hour at 11 a.m., followed by a noon luncheon. The unique fashion show is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
The spectacular will feature fashions from The Secret Ingredient, Day Furs and Teeter Totter this year.
CARA Charities, one of motorsport's leading charitable organizations, also is celebrating twenty-five years of operation and more than $4 million in donations. Tickets are now available for the May 25th event with individual tickets priced at $75 per person.
