Philadelphia, PA July 23, 2001 . . . When Dale Earnhardt, Jr. won the NASCAR Winston Cup Pepsi 400 at Daytona International Speedway back on July 7th, he brought a lot of attention to major league stock car racing. This Thursday, July 26th, Dale Earnhardt, Jr and Friends Day will be bringing a lot of attention to Philadelphia.

Just a day before NASCAR Winston Cup and ARCA RE/MAX Series racing action gets underway at Pocono Raceway, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Friends Day will be presented at Memorial Hall in beautiful Fairmount Park. Admission is FREE.

This fund raising event, with title sponsorship from Coca Cola and Nabisco, is held annually and designed to benefit the Urban Youth Racing League, the only program of it's kind in the country. The youth program uses racing as a magnet and education as a compass in working with the youngsters enrolled in the one of a kind program.

"Getting involved with this program, the first and only charity that I'm involved with right now, I'm confident that it is going to give the kids direction and inspiration to strive in life to reach goals. I know how difficult that can be, and any type of help or advice is going to profit them," said the former NASCAR Busch Series champion now a major star on the NASCAR Winston Cup circuit.

One of the key events of the day, with activities scheduled to get the green flag at 1 p.m., is the Dale Earnhardt,Jr Celebrity Shootout. Nationally known sports car racer Bill Lester will be part of the Shootout as will NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series racers Willy T. Ribbs and Carlos Contreras. Several other NASCAR drivers will also be on hand to help Earnhardt, Jr. make this event a huge success. Hank Parker Jr., a well known name in NASCAR Busch Series racing will be participating along with Coy Gibbs, J.D. Gibbs and, perhaps, a surprise participant or two. The Shootout will have the drivers competing in a "serious" but fun racing event on a specially prepared track at Memorial Hall in Fairmount Park.

There will be a race event, using the Mini-Cup cars, for the youngsters involved in the UYRL program along with events for selected members of the media and the professional drivers on hand.

The Urban Youth Racing League is a non-profit organization strongly endorsed by the City of Philadelphia with support from a number of large corporations including Coca Cola, Nabisco, General Motors and NASCAR. The program for the Urban Youth Racing League is designed to teach youth all aspects of auto racing, how to be part of the growing motorsports industry and how to apply themselves in the classroom.

The event this year is expected to be bigger and better than the previous two.

It will be a great opportunity for people to come out and see Earnhardt, Jr. and several other well known names in the sport in person. Fans will have the opportunity to visit a number of displays, purchase souvenirs from a variety of vendors, and have an up-close look at a variety of racing vehicles that will be on display. All proceeds from the day's activities will benefit Urban Youth League Racing.
