AFTER YESTERDAY'S PROLOGUE, THE RALLY OF SARDINIA 2010 STARTED OFFICIALLY WITH THE LONGEST STAGE, AND THE HARDEST FOR ALL RIDERS OF APRILIA: LOPEZ AND FARRES HAVE BEEN OBLIGATED TO WITHDRAW, WHILE ALEX ZANOTTI IS 11TH.
ARBOREA (OR) - The happiness of Giofil Aprilia 's victory in Tunisia was followed by the "Sardegna Rally Race 2010", the third leg of the Cross Country Rally World Championship that started this morning from San Teodoro. The first stage of the rally was the longest of the race with 480 km, with two timed sections, of 122 and 65 km respectively. It was a terrible day for two of Aprilia riders: Spanish rider Gerard Farres had to withdraw right away because of a mechanical problem, probably of electrical nature (and has not arrived to the bivouac in Arborea yet).
Also Francisco Lopez had a bad day. A stone made a hole in the additional tank that the team installed next to the left radiator, and he lost two liters of fuel that were necessary to complete the 122 km timed section. Without the fuel, the bike stopped six km from the finish of the first section of the special and other rider stopped to propose him fuel from his bike. The "curse" of the fuel has followed Lopez that arrived to Arborea and seeing that his race was compromised, he decided to withdraw and go home to Chile to prepare himself in the best way for the next important tests: The Pharaon 's Rally and the Dakar 2011.
The only rider that stays on the race is Alex Zanotti. San Marino 's rider has obtained the 9th and 14th time in the first and second timed section of the first stage, which gives him the 11th overall position of the day. Due to a problem with the trip master in the bike, which did not work correctly, he could not carry out an accurate navigation: he had to follow the signs of the road-book to finish the special. Also, in the second part of the day, he couldn 't ride smoothly because of a navigation mistake that made him go for some extra kilometers. He finished the stage with a gap of 11 minutes from the winner of the day, Marc Coma.
Francisco Lopez: "A stone on the road made a hole in the additional tank that I had in the bike and it was dried a few kilometers before the arrival of the first part of the special. Here in Sardinia we are using the enduro bike, due to the nature of the grown, and we are more interested on developing the Tuareg 4.5 bike for African races. That is why I decided to leave the race and return to Chile, where I will prepare the Pharaon 's Rally and also the Dakar 2011. The Rally of Sardinia was the last occasion to practice navigation, but after today 's misfortune, I don 't have the brain to focus on the race."
