Leg 7 : Aleppo - Palmyra (Syria)

The race continues...

First victory for Wambergue and Cottret's Protruck.
A road section leg for the motorcyclists.

René Metge's briefing

All faces expressed emotion when René spoke before the participants in the Rally this morning at the Palmyra bivouac. Andréa Mayer, rider and John Deacon's friend, was at his side. She addressed everyone announcing her decision to discontinue the Master in Palmyra for reasons that everybody fully understood. Addressing more especially her motorcyclist friends, she encouraged them to continue the Master until the finish in Petra: "John loved motorbikes, he loved racing. For him you must continue, life goes on..." Presenting the day's leg, René announced that the last special on Syrian land was shortened, decreasing from 291 KM to 124 km. The Master Rallye 2001 arrived in Jordan this evening...

The start of the road section.

In tribute to their comrade, all the motorcyclists still present in the race decided not to race today. Therefore they rode in convoy to the bivouac in Al Mafraq. They reported to the time control on time at the start of the road section and immediately gave in their cards. 29 cars lined up at the exit of the bivouac. When each of them passed at the foot of the antique columns, it was like a modern time procession going to meet the marvels of antiquity. A superb image!

SS11 Palmyra - Gharbl: 124 KM

Driving from the start to the finish, concentration was required above all on the road-book. The number of trails available could have thrown more than one person off balance. This was not the case! No sudden turn of events to be recorded... Protruck N°207 was in the limelight signing the scratch at the finish. The first victory of Wambergue and Cottret in this Master Rallye 2001 won unanimous support. Schlesser and Kleinschmidt worked their way out of their cabin to congratulate the team. For once everyone was in agreement! Yet the driver of Buggy N°200 had rushed headlong at top speed into the fray as if to confirm his performance of the day before. He lost the command of the leg in the second part by straying a little from the main trail. The driver of Mitsubishi N°201 took this opportunity to slip in between, signing the second time. De Mevius on Nissan N°205, third in the provisional overall rating, continues a faultless course...

In T1, the relentless battle fought by the drivers continues to animate the background of the race. The best time today was made by Strugo in Mercedes N°208. In the overall, the order has remained unchanged: Lansac in Mercedes N°216 maintains the leadership.

On the programme tomorrow ...

More, more, more... From Al Mafraq to Wadi Rum. Tomorrow the competitors still in the race will attack a choice morsel! The SS12, traced over rocky tracks will be the longest of the edition 2001. Motorcyclists and car-drivers will cross incredible dried lakes! Over thirty of them... To arrive at the loveliest bivouac of this Master Rallye in Wadi Rum.
