Rolex 24 At Daytona Sports Car Test -- Day 3 of 3
FERRARI LOWERS "UNOFFICIAL" TRACK RECORD AS ROLEX 24 TESTING CONCLUDES
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Ferrari 333SP of Yannick Dalmas, Bob Wollek , Max Papis and Ron Fellows turned in the quickest Can-Am time for the third consecutive day as teams concluded a three-day test in preparation for the Jan. 31-Feb. 1 Rolex 24 At Daytona. Bettering their "unofficial" track record-breaking lap from Saturday, the Ferrari 333SP turned in a time of 1:39.608 seconds, for an average speed of 128.644 mph. In the GT-1 class, the exotic "Batmobile-looking" Panoz GTR also bettered its "unofficial" GT-1 track record with a lap of 1:44.131 seconds, for an average speed of 123.076 mph. The current GT-1 record, set during qualifying for last year's Rolex 24 At Daytona, is still held by Olivier Baretta in a Dodge Viper GTR. Another car besting the GT-1 track record was the radical Porsche GT1 of Scotland's Andy McNish. McNish, who aside from his sports car driving duties is a test driver for the Benetton Formula One team, had a refreshing perspective on Daytona's daunting 31-degree banking. "My first sensation of the banking was terrifying," said McNish. "There is no other way to put it. It was very, very different than what I expected. The only things we have as steep as Daytona's banking in Scotland are mountains, and we don't race on them. The Rolex 24 is certainly going to be a very hard race, and there's going to be a lot of stiff competition. There are a lot of cars that will challenge in GT-1 including the Panoz and the Champion Porsche team. The one thing we do know is our Porsche is going to perform, we don't know exactly how the Panoz are going to run, although they will be fast. So it's going to be a tough race, but I feel we're going to be up to the challenge." The busy schedule of pre-season testing at the "World Center of Racing" continues tomorrow as General Motors NASCAR Winston Cup teams begin their final three-day test session before Speedweeks next month. A section of the Oldfield Grandstand is open to fans daily at no charge from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with access through DAYTONA USA, "The Ultimate Motorsports Attraction." Guided tours of the Speedway are also available (weather permitting) from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for a nominal fee.
