POLE POSITION AND A PODIUM FOR DECINA RACING
The Speed FX/Decina Racing outfit enjoyed great success at its home round of the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Championship Series with pole position and second place at Oran Park Raceway today.
The Sydney based team was ecstatic with the performance that saw rookie driver Michael Caruso finish a close second to series leader Adam Macrow in race one after earlier claiming his first pole position for the team.
Caruso set a blistering 1:09.5333 second qualifying lap around the difficult western Sydney circuit on just his third lap of the day, a time that was not headed throughout the session.
Caruso's pole position placed him on the difficult inside of the track on the starting grid for today's race, and a less than ideal start allowed Macrow to get ahead of him at the first corner. V8 Supercar Rookie Caruso was not passed again as he comfortably ran in second place for the entire 16 lap race.
Caruso never look threatened running at the front in a race that saw two separate safety car periods that meant a large portion of the race was carried out under yellow flag conditions.
"Yesterday was a day of firsts for us -- it was my first time on the circuit in a V8 and the team's first time racing at this venue. We've all been trying to adapt quickly and the team have done extremely well on a steep learning curve," said Caruso.
"We're all feeling through the roof at the moment, it was an excellent job from my team today. Des Conway (Race Engineer) joining the team has been great, he only came on Thursday and we're still getting to know each other, but we've quickly developed a good relationship and that is helping on track."
"The start was difficult today as there was no grip on the track, especially on the inside where I was, it was hard to get rubber down. I'm really happy to have won my first pole position and chalked up another second placing for Speed FX/Decina Racing"
Speed FX/Decina Racing team manager Jim Morton is confident that the team has the car speed to achieve its objective of delivering Caruso his first round win in a V8 Supercar this weekend.
"The round has been good so far and it was great to win pole position. While we would have liked a race win, we're happy to have secured such a comfortable second placing," said Morton.
"The car is looking good and we'll just do some fine tuning, we think we can get a slightly better package by adjusting the tyre pressures and race package slightly."
"The Speed FX/Decina Racing team is will be taking a conservative approach to the reverse grid race and we are looking forward to being in a good position for the final race to achieve our weekend objective of a round victory."
"Being the only Sydney team in the championship we consider ourselves a local team at Oran Park even though this isn't our test track. We've got a lot of corporate supporters and Decina customers here this weekend and it's pleasing to perform strongly in front of them."
Tomorrow's racing begins at 10.05am with a 16 lap reverse grid race, before the final 28 lap feature at 1.20pm.
