DECINA RACING SET FOR HOMETOWN CAMPAIGN
Speed FX/Decina Racing made a solid start to its first 'home' Sydney campaign today in round four of the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Championship Series at Oran Park Raceway.
The team showed immediate pace on their first ever excursion on the technical Oran Park circuit, setting the sixth fastest time in opening practice. Rookie driver Michael Caruso again showed himself as a man to watch as he set lap times comparable to the big names in the category.
The learning experience continued for Speed FX/Decina Racing in the second practice session, when some changes to set-up held them back from improving on their first practice time. The team was disappointed not to place higher in the order but believe they will find more pace over the weekend with the use of two sets of new tyres.
The practice session result places Caruso in the top half of the field for qualifying tomorrow and he will be approaching the weekend with confidence on the back of the Mona Vale based team's strong qualifying performances so far this season.
"We're struggling a bit for car set-up, but we expected that to happen in our first time here. Every track is a learning experience for us so we're normally not that quick in practice," said Caruso.
"We had no new tyres today and I think there'll be some major gains to be made on fresh tyres. We were right up there in the first practice session but then made some changes for practice two that sent us backwards,"
"I'm confident we'll have a good car set-up tomorrow and the important thing is that we're in the top half for qualifying. I think we've got a good opportunity to be on the front row. We're not too far away, we've started off quicker than a normal weekend and we always qualify well."
Team Manager Jim Morton expects more from his charges over the weekend but believes that fresh tyres paired with the always strong Stone Brothers Racing engines will set the team up for a strong result this weekend.
"We're disappointed because we thought we'd be in a higher position. We were using old tyres all day but I think enough teams ahead of us were on old tyres as well so we should have been higher," said Morton.
"Our brakes and engines are good, as they have been all year, and we've got two sets of tyres we haven't used yet."
"It's a new track for Fujitsu teams so we had some learning to do. Unfortunately our car set-up was closer in practice one so we'll be going back to basics and doing some work on the balance of the car. We hope to have a good set-up tomorrow on fresh tyres for qualifying."
Shane Price set the fastest time in practice today ahead of current Fujitsu series leader Adam Macrow with Price's team-mate Jack Perkins third fastest.
