Sweet 16th for Johnston in Formula Ford Finale.
South Australian Asher Johnston completed his debut race weekend in the Ford Racing Australian Formula Ford Championship in the best possible fashion at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide today, scoring his best result of the weekend in today's third event - a measured and intelligent 16th position after a tough 10 lapper.
The result capped off a strong debut weekend for Johnston, who this weekend was competing in his first ever race meeting on the demanding 3.22km Adelaide street circuit. After learning the ropes in the opening two races of the weekend, Johnston again demonstrated that he is a star of the future in Australian Motorsport with his drive in the third race -- capping off his weekend on a high.
Johnston said that he was happy to have made progress forward in each session and race this weekend.
"It's always fantastic when you can make up positions and improve each time you get onto the race track, which was really our goal this weekend," he said. "We came here to gain experience, get some miles under our belt and get some exposure for our sponsors, and I'm really happy that we have achieved that goal.
"We also had the aim as the weekend progressed to be the best South Australian competitor in the field, so to achieve that in all three races against some of the competition we have in this field is fantastic." He enthused.
And despite it being just a one -- off drive for this weekend, Johnston said that he had been firmly bitten by the Formula Ford bug.
"These cars are just fantastic to drive, and I'm very keen to get some more seat time in the near future if we can. G-Force Mygale have been absolutely fantastic and have listened to all my feedback after each session, and helped me refine the car's setup as the weekend went on.
"I also have to thanks all of our sponsors for this weekend," he said. "Without the support of Knowledge Plus, Motor Traders, Duplex IT, Wayne Richards Auto, Pro Paint and Panel, ASI Systems and everyone else that has helped me out with this weekend's opportunity."
Johnston may be 18, but there is no doubt that he wont be complaining about having a sweet 16th all over again this weekend.
