Testing Times at Bathurst 12 Hour
The opening day of practice for Sunday's WPS Bathurst 12 Hour has proved for the most part to be a frustrating affair for the Wilson Brothers Racing Subaru Impreza WRX Stis.
The cars of Craig Baird/Lee Castle/Rodney Forbes and Paul Kelly/Max Twigg/Dean Grant both suffered fuel pick up problems relating to the foam in their fuel tanks, which restricted the number of laps both cars completed in practice.
The issue restricted veteran Baird from taking to the track today in anger.
The other team car of David Wood/Chris Delfsma/Gary Tierney had a trouble free run throughout, with the crew coming to terms with the circuit and car.
Team principal Cam Wilson is optimistic for improved day tomorrow despite the set backs.
"It's a shame that a couple of the cars have had problems, but it's still very early days yet," said Wilson.
"After the Friday at this event 12 months ago we were in a very similar position as far as lap times go, and I have no doubt with the problems resolved tonight, the crew have the ability to improve their speed.
"This issue never showed up in pre-race testing, but that's just the nature of Bathurst.
"Critically, on the data from all of the cars, they are much improved in some crucial areas, but we just need to give the drivers some time to become comfortable over the top of the mountain and on the entry to the Chase."
In the number 25 car, Castle spent the day dialing himself into the 6.12km circuit, and set a best time for the day of 2:41.4728, while Forbes tuned into driving a 4WD car around Bathurst.
Wood was a surprise packet in car number 22, setting a best time of 2:43.2362 in his first time in a Subaru and also his Bathurst debut.
Delfsma and Tierney spent the day adjusting to the Subaru from their regular respective GT Falcon and Porsche race cars.
It was a similar story for Kelly, Twigg and Grant, all coming to grips with the car, and Kelly taking his first laps of the circuit.
