Supabarn Motorsports on Pole for Bathurst 12 Hour
Canberra based Supabarn Motorsports have surprised everyone by claiming pole position for this weekend's WPS Bathurst 12 Hour race by over 1.8 seconds.
The team's number 96 Mitsubishi Lancer RS was piloted by 2008 Fujitsu V8 Supercar Champion, Steve Owen who took just four laps to set the unbeatable time.
Owen completed all four laps early in the session, before returning to the pit lane and waiting to see if anyone could catch his time.
Owen will be joined by the team's regular drivers, Canberra based James and Theo Koundouris, when the race kicks off tomorrow morning at 6:30am.
"We were watching the split times as Steve completed the lap and knew it was looking good -- we didn't realise just how good it was until he crossed the line," said Theo after the race.
"Then it was a case of sitting back and waiting for the session to finish!
"It felt like it would never end, but when it did it was great to see the Supabarn Lancer on the top of the page!"
The team knows that tomorrow will be an even bigger challenge but they are starting in the best possible position.
"The race tomorrow will be the real test," said James Koundouris after the session.
"We know the car is very quick, but reliability will be the biggest factor in deciding whether or not we are successful tomorrow.
"Running here this weekend was a last minute decision, but Michael Newton and the rest of the team have done an amazing job with the car.
"I cannot speak highly enough of Steve Owen, we knew he would be quick, but his whole approach has been very impressive."
More accustomed to fighting each other on the race track, the brothers are looking forward to racing together and conquering one of Australian motorsport greatest challenges.
Both James and Theo had good results when they raced there in Carrera Cup last October, finishing the final race of the weekend in 7th and 8th place and are hoping for an even better result tomorrow.
