Tech-Speed Looks To Oulton Park

Oulton Park Circuit

Tech-Speed Keen To Bounce Back At Oulton Park with Tech-Speed Motorsport will seek to break back into the points when the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship heads to Oulton Park this weekend for the fourth meeting of the 2011 season.

The team endured a trying weekend last time out at Thruxton, where the high-speed nature of the Hampshire circuit played into the hands of rival teams running a turbo-charged NGTC engine as opposed to the normally aspirated 2-litre unit fitted to the with Tech-Speed Chevrolet Cruzes.

Ahead of the Oulton Park weekend, the team – alongside its rivals running Super 2000 machines – has been given a weight break by series organisers TOCA, although it remains to be seen what impact it will have against the turbo cars.

Although he was unable to score points at Thruxton, Widnes-racer Paul O’Neill heads into his home event having retained a place inside the top ten in the championship standings while he also sits inside the top six in the Independents’ title race.

The with Tech-Speed team has worked hard in the gap that followed round three to make improvements to the Chevrolet ahead of the visit to Cheshire and as a result, Paul goes into his home round looking to add to his points tally while also getting his Independents’ title challenge back on track.

“If we can get the weight out of the car that we are now allowed to take out, then that is going to help us move up a few places in qualifying and get into the top ten,” he said. “Then we can focus on building on that in the races. The lower base weight is a start, but we found a few things on the car that we wanted to look at and the guys have worked hard to make some changes ahead of the weekend. I’m sure the car will be mint and it’s going to be interesting to see what impact those changes have when we hit the track.

“Oulton Park is my home track and I do a lot of work there so I’m keen to see what we can do this weekend. I want to put on a good show and it’s vital that we have a good weekend. We can’t afford to have another weekend like Thruxton, and we won’t have another one like that.”

Guernsey-based team-mate John George enjoyed a strong weekend at Oulton Park last season where he showed impressive pace throughout the meeting; even if that pace wasn’t reflected in the end results.

John goes into the weekend seeking to score his first points finish of the season at the wheel of the Chevrolet after a number of years racing a BTC-spec Honda Integra, although his primary focus is to continue the progress made so far this season in his new machine.

“I did well at Oulton Park last season and I’m looking forward to getting back out on track this weekend,” he said. “While we have been told we can take some weight out of the car, it isn’t going to close the gap to the turbos, but I’ll go into the weekend looking to do the best that I can. Hopefully, things will go better than at Thruxton and my aim is to challenge the other S2000 cars and try and to make progress in each of the races.” with Tech-Speed currently sit eighth in the HiQ Teams Trophy and fifth in the Independents’ standings heading into the Oulton Park weekend and will hope to run well at a venue where it will gain plenty of support thanks to Paul’s local connections.

“We’ve had good results at Oulton Park in the past and we hope to do a good job again this weekend,” Tech-Speed boss Marvin Humphries said. “I’m not sure how much of the weight we can get out of the car to get down to the new base weight, but it isn’t going to have a massive effect compared to the turbo cars. We need to wait and see when we get on track but we are optimistic about Oulton Park and will give it our best shot.”

The latest three rounds of the 2011 season will feature extensive live coverage on ITV4 and on Sunday, with a live broadcast running from 11:30-18:00. Round ten of the season is due to start at 12:15, with round eleven at 14:30 and round twelve at 17:10 (schedule changes permitting).

This season, the BTCC will also appear in High Definition on ITV4 HD while Saturday’s qualifying session, which is due to run from 15:15-15:45, will be available to view on the website.
