WARWICK SIGNS WITH VAUXHALL

Former Grand Prix star Derek Warwick has been confirmed as John Cleland's Vauxhall team-mate for next season's Auto Trader RAC Touring Car Championship.

Warwick, 42, raced in Formula 1 for Renault, Brabham, Arrows and Lotus, and he won Le Mans with Peugeot in 1992. He switched to the BTCC in 1995 with Alfa Romeo but, after an unsuccessful debut year in the Auto Trader Championship, sat out the '96 season.

Said Warwick: 'After my season with Alfa Romeo, which didn't quite go to plan, I have a lot of unfinished business to carry out. I think John Cleland and I will form a strong relationship. We get on extremely well away from the circuits and have similar ideas about what's needed to win the championship in 1997. We'll be pushing each other along and I'm relishing the chance to race again in the world's most competitive touring car championship.'

In addition to his driving duties, Warwick is also a director of Triple Eight Race Engineering Ltd, the team which will run Vauxhall's 1997 BTCC campaign with the Vectra model. The car won only one race in '96 and Cleland -- champion in 1995 with the Vauxhall Cavalier -- finished the season in eighth place in the drivers' championship. -- Official BTCC website: Best in British Motor Sport http://www.demon.co.uk/racing
