British Touring Car Championship Qualifying
Sunday 2nd June 2002
Silverstone International Circuit, England
After three rounds of the 2002 British Touring Car Championship three drivers share the lead in the championship. Yvan Muller, James Thompson and Matt Neal are all on 59 points ahead of the next-best driver Anthony Reid on 35 points. This Bank Holiday weekend the series is at Silverstone to race on the International Circuit.
Sprint Race Qualifying:
Matt Neal qualified his Vauxhall Astra in pole position for tomorrow's Sprint race at the head of an unusually ordered field. Warren Hughes was second in his MG and Paul O'Neill third for Vauxhall. Joint championship leaders Muller and Thompson were down in fifth and seventh respectively in their heavily ballasted Vauxhall Astras.
Neal, Muller and O'Neill initially struggled in the high 1m 28s as Thompson and Reid went straight to the top of the times. Phil Bennett then went fastest with 1m 28.419s, his best lap of the session. Most drivers then returned to the pits to make minor adjustments to their cars and, on returning to the track, Muller, Dan Eaves, Reid, Warren Hughes, David Leslie, Gareth Howell, Alan Morrison, Andy Priaulx and O'Neill all improved on their penultimate or final laps. However on his last lap Neil gave everything and improved by half a second to record a pole-setting 1m 28.231s.
Tom Chilton had all his times disallowed and will line up in 17th place at the back of the Touring class.

Feature Race Qualifying:
Having qualified in second and fourth for the Sprint Race during the first half of the qualifying MG continued their fine form and qualified in pole and fourth for the Feature race.
Anthony Reid was on the pace right from the start and, after an initial exporatory lap, he set the fastest lap of the session at 1m 28.115s. On the next lap his team-mate Warren Hughes set his fastest lap which was just just 0.175s slower than Reid's. Muller, Thompson, Eaves, Howell, Breeze and Priaulx all responded to this pressure by setting their fastest laps in the early part of the session, but none of these were able to improve as conditions slowly became overcast. Meanwhile Matt Neal managed only one flying lap and still managed to qualify in seventh place. Also Andy Priaulx was limited to just one competitive flying lap and he qualified in 14th place.
Tom Chilton lost his times from the first part of the session but was allowed to keep his fastest lap from the second half of the session.
