Team PSP Gets First Ever Fastest Lap In Action-Packed Weekend
Once again, Team PSP's drivers put up spirited performances that went unrewarded through no fault of their own. Fast-maturing rookie Fariqe Hairuman finished strongly in two of the three races on what is recognised as one of the most demanding circuits that BTCC visits. Shaun Watson Smith scored two good top-ten finishes and set Team PSP's first ever fastest lap in Race 2 before being punted into retirement.
Fariqe Hairuman: "I'm pleased with my achievements this weekend. It was frustrating to pick up debris after a great start in the first race, and I had two big moments in the third race avoiding other drivers, otherwise I'm sure I would have finished higher. The Indy circuit is very challenging but I have finished two races and am getting closer to a top-ten finish in the world's best Touring Car championship."
Shaun Watson Smith: "I'm feeling very positive and I'm delighted for Petronas to secure Team PSP's first fastest lap in BTCC. Clearly we have a good chassis, we just need a bit more straight-line speed. Despite the problems in qualifying, I had a good first race and chose to stay in seventh rather than taking sixth from the MG, so I got a great grid position for the second race. Despite setting fastest lap I got punted off by the same MG on the fastest corner and couldn't continue. In the last race, I started from the back of the grid and ended up in front of the man on pole. Silverstone should be interesting..."
Mike Carroll (Chief Engineer): "We've continued the pace we showed at Thruxton - and enduring challenges from other drivers. Fariqe's retirement was due to picking up debris from Plato's huge accident, which damaged his brake system. He drove very maturely in the two ensuing rounds and brought the car home well. He's done well on a very tough circuit in a very competitive series. Shaun put up a first-rate performance, winning our first-ever fastest lap. I'm pleased but I know there's more to come - we want podiums."
David Wong (Team Principal): "The team did a great job this weekend. I'm very pleased with the way that Fariqe is maturing, learning the ropes and picking up race pace. He's keeping out of trouble but still competing strongly. I really believe he'll be in the top ten soon - no mean achievement so soon in his career. As for Shaun, he's done us proud with our first fastest lap. No podiums yet this year but they must be just around the corner."
