TEAM AON HEAD TO SEASON FINALE FOR CHAMPIONSHIP SHOWDOWN
Team Aon travel to this weekend's Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) finale at the iconic Brands Hatch circuit in Kent, still challenging to win all five championship titles up for grabs during the 2010 season, after a hugely successful year for the Aon backed Ford team.
The Arena Motorsport run Team Aon squad currently sit second behind Honda Racing in both the Teams' and Constructors' title race, within striking distance for both titles, indeed the margin to the Honda/ Dynamics squad in the constructors championship is a mere nine points. Team Aon lead the Independents Team Trophy, with a healthy, but not insurmountable 25 point cushion over Airwaves BMW.
In the driver's standings Tom Onslow-Cole heads into Sunday's finale with the opportunity to become one of the youngest BTCC champions in the series half century of history, although he will need to overcome the 24 point lead that clear favourite Jason Plato's Chevrolet has built up, as well as beat the two Hondas of Matt Neal and Gordon Shedden, who are also still challenging for the drivers top honours. Onslow-Cole can also win the Independent drivers championship, he currently leads the standings by 18 points from Steven Kane, with team-mate Tom Chilton just behind in third.
BTCC fans can follow all of the weekend's action as Saturday's all important qualifying session will be streamed live on ITV.com from 15:30 and then all three races will be shown live on ITV4 from 10:30am on Sunday in a extended programme for what promises to be a thrilling conclusion to the season.
Tom Onslow-Cole (#21), BTCC Standings: 4th -- 200 points (Drivers) & 1st -- 241 (Independents).
"I can't wait for Brands Hatch. Although we are going in to the day 4th, that means we are the lightest of the title contenders, (in terms of success ballast) which could put us ahead in Qualifying and Race one. Brands is a short lap, meaning a tenth [of a second] in quali can be the difference between 1st and 5th.
We've done the consistent points scoring part and got ourselves into a position to win. Now we have nothing to lose and everything to gain, I can't wait to get stuck in!"
Tom Chilton (#23), BTCC Standings: 5th -- 171 points (Drivers) & 3rd -- 219 (Independents).
"It's a huge weekend for the team. We only started to build and develop this Ford Focus last year and we've introduced the LPG powered engines this year as well. It's an incredible achievement to not only turn the whole package into a race winning combination, but to actually still be fighting to win all of the championship titles as well.
As for my position - I can't win the Drivers title now, but I will be doing everything I can to help us secure the championships we can win. It's going to be close, it always is at Brands, and there is so much at stake this weekend for a lot of teams and a lot of drivers. What a way to finish the season!"
Mike Earle, Team Principal: 2nd -- 346 points (Team) & 2nd -- 491 points (Constructor).
"We go to the season finale, still with a chance to win all of the championship titles, which is a huge credit to the team and everyone at Arena Motorsport that has worked so hard this season to deliver what has been a consistently competitive and reliable car.
We will give it our all this weekend as ever and hopefully walk away from the season with a championship title, which will be just reward and thanks in no small part to the fantastic support we have received from all of our partners this season; Aon, Calor, Auto Windscreens and of course Ford, as well as all of our technical suppliers. My sincere thanks to each and everyone of them."
