Watkins Glen, NY (September 28, 1999) - Bob Wollek, 4-time winner of the Rolex 24 At Daytona, 7-time winner of the Porsche Cup, 2-time winner at Sebring and 3-time World Champion Skier, has entered the FIA GT Championship race at Watkins Glen for the Bosch Sports Car Oktoberfest weekend.
Wollek, an all-around superstar athlete and world-class sports car driver, will be among the drivers leading the field in the No. 15 Freisinger Motorsports Porsche 911 GT2 as European GT teams prepare to take on thirteen American GT teams, led by Lar ry Schumacher and John O'Steen. The drivers will clash at the Bosch Sports Car Oktoberfest weekend in the FIA GT Championship.
Watkins Glen will once again be a center of international competition as teams and drivers representing nine different countries will be competing at The Glen. Teams attempting to earn podium finishes at the 3.37 mile road course in the FIA GT Champ ionship race include the favorites from Chrysler Viper Team Oreca, Olivier Beretta from France, and former F-1 driver and teammate, Karl Wendlinger from Austria. Also driving for Team Oreca is American ace David Donohue and Frenchman Jean-Philippe Belloc.
Other teams feature drivers from Germany, Holland, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Great Britain, Japan and Belgium. The FIA GT Championship at Watkins Glen will be the feature race for the Oktoberfest weekend and will field nearly thirty American and European GT2 and GT3 teams. The FIA GT Championship will cover 500 kilometers on The Glen's 3.37 mile Grand Prix course and is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, October 3, and last approximately 3 hours.
In addition to the great on-track action from the FIA GT Championship Series, The Glen will be entertaining families and guests in classic German Oktoberfest style. Visitors on Oktoberfest weekend will sample authentic German food, traditional Oktoberfest music and an Oktoberfest beer garden. Kids can ride the giant ferris-wheel or walk on the moon in the Oktoberfest Family Fun Zone Carnival. Saturday's activities will be topped off with a free concert from fan-favorite, Nik & The Nice Guys, perfo rming everyone's favorite hits.
