BAS LEINDERS: WE DESERVED A PODIUM FINISH!
The Belgian round of the FIA GT1 World Championship, held during the Spa 24 Hours meeting, was not a positive affair for the Marc VDS Racing Team. The Ford GT of Leinders-Martin had to retire early, while the car of Kuppens-Palttala finished in 15th, also hit by a clumsy colleague...
The Ford GT started as 10th (Leinders-Martin, at the end of the Qualifying Race victim of an ignition problem) and 15th (Palttala-Kuppens) and a good start it was, too. Maxime Martin quickly gained some places and ended the first lap in 8th. But in Combes it al went wrong. "When I started to turn in, I was hit twice by Richard Westbrook. I spun, could get going again, but in the chicane I was hit again, this time by the Corvette of Maassen. Our car turned out to be undriveable, suffering from bad understeer. I had no other choice than to retire."
Bas Leinders was furious as well. "It is really incredible that we have cope with this kind of behaviour. Frankly, Westbrook and Mutsch did not deserve to win the race, even though they led most of it. I found it quite fitting that the Lamborghini of Zonta-Kechele and the Maserati of Heger-Muller eventually passed them to finish in first and second. But we deserved to be third!"
Renaud Kuppens and Markus Palttala claimed 15th with their Ford GT #41... even though it was not an easy race! On the starting grid, the mechanics of the Marc VDS Racing Team noticed a leak in the radiator, but some quick and efficient work managed to solve that problem. Markus Palttala took the start, but at the last chicane he too was hit by a clumsy colleague. "One of the Aston just hit me in the back. I spun of course. A real shame, but there is nothing we could do about it," a gutted Finn said. Renaud Kuppens eventually managed to climb back to 15th.
