Two Muhlner Porsche to start the Spa 24 hours
Francorchamps. The Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, based Muhlner Motorsport Team will be running two Porsche 911 GT3 Cup S in their home race, the Spa 24 Hours.
In 2009 the Muhlner Team will again be entered in the G3 Division in the season highlight of the FIA GT Championship, which Renate-Carola and Bernhard Muhlner's team have won every time which they have contested it, namely 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008. In 2004 and 2008 the Muhlner Porsches even scored a one-two.
In earlier years, when touring cars were allowed to run in the Ardennes classic, Muhlner Motorsport won the hard-fought 2 litre class a total of three times, in 1996 also achieving a one-two.
"With seven class wins, three of those one-twos, we have a terrific record to show in this twice-around-the-clock around the Ardennes rollercoaster and have a huge amount of experience. Nevertheless, every year we start from scratch, we can't rely on our previous successes" knows team boss and chief strategist Renate-Carola Muhlner.
"A 24 hour race is always a particular challenge for both the people and the material. The equipment has to survive and for that you have to do everything possible in preparation -- only a perfectly prepared car can withstand the huge challenges of a 24 hour race. It is not enough to prepare the major components like engine, gearbox and suspension; the small things also need to be done. It is no coincidence that one hears of a "twopenny" part causing problems. Only when all the little components work, can the whole thing work as it should" said Bernhard Muhlner who is responsible for the technical side of things.
Driving the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup S number 124 are four experienced gentleman drivers: Dr. Jurgen Haring (Bubsheim), Dimitrios (known as Taki) Konstantinou (Walddorfhaslach), Achim Durr (Buhl) and Rene Bourdeaux (Munchen). All four know one another well having competing with and also against one another in the Porsche Sports Cup.
The crew of the number 123 car is not yet decided. There are numerous enquiries but Muhlner Motorsport know only too well the importance of a homogenous and balanced driver crew. Along with tactics and strategy as well as no technical problems, this has been a major factor in their many successes over the years.
2009 sees, in addition to the opportunity to win the class, a chance of a good overall result. In this season, in the events where the FIA GT3 Championship was running along with the main FIA GT Championship, the GT3 laptimes have been on a par with those of the GT2 cars. This adds spice to an already exciting prospect. The meeting starts with free practice on Thursday 23rd July 2009.
