FIRST QUALIFYING SESSION -- LISTER AND FERRARI SET THE PACE
Jamie Campbell-Walter set fastest time in first qualifying for the sixth round of the FIA GT Championship at Oschersleben. The Briton, driving the nr 14 Lister Storm Racing Lister Storm, set a time of 1m24.263s to beat the nr 23 BMS Scuderia Italia Ferrari 550 Maranello of Andrea Piccini and Jean-Denis Deletraz by two-tenths of a second.
Fabrizio Gollin was third fastest in the nr 4 Carsport Holland Chrysler Viper GTS-R that he shares with Luca Cappellari. The second Carsport Holland Chrysler Viper GTS-R of Mike Hezemans and Anthony Kumpen was sixth fastest, and will take the final Super Pole position. The drivers could not explain the lack of pace. "We are simply not fast enough," said Kumpen.
Both of the Larbre Competition Chrysler Viper GTS-Rs made this afternoon's Super Pole session, Vincent Vosse and Carl Rosenblad heading their team-mates Christophe Bouchut and David Terrien. Bouchut qualified the nr 1 Chrysler Viper fifth fastest despite carrying the maximum 100kg success ballast and breaking an anti-roll bar during the session. "You have to use a lot of kerb around this track, but with the ballast, it is very easy to break things," said Bouchut. "We will have to be extra careful during the race."
The second Lister Storm Racing Lister Storm, nr 15 of Paul Knapfield and Bobby Verdon-Roe, was unable to set a representative time due to a recurrence of the oil pressure problems that blighted their Friday free-practice. The team fitted a new engine overnight but the problem persisted and they were 23rd fastest. The nr 12 Paul Belmondo Racing Chrysler Viper GTS-R of Fabio Babini and Marc Duez missed the Super Pole cut qualifying seventh, Duez complaining of a lack of grip after making set-up changes overnight. "The changes would not have made that much difference," said the Belgian, who was fastest during yesterday's first free practice. The nr 16 Proton Competition Porsche 91 GT2 of Gerold and Christian Reid completed only three laps before blowing its engine.
The N-GT class was led by the nr 51 JMB Racing Ferrari of Andrea Garbagnati and Andrea Bertolini, the pair claiming top spot in the dying moments of the session with a time of 1m28.875s. They beat the nr 53 JMB Competition Ferrari 360 Modena of Batti Pregliasco, Peter Kutemann and Iradj Alexander by just one tenth of a second. Christian Pescatori and Andrea Montermini made the top six in the nr 50 JMB Racing Ferrari 360 Modena, having changed the engine overnight. "We have some set-up problems," said Pescatori. "We have both understeer and oversteer!"
Stephane Ortelli was third fastest in the nr 54 Freisinger Motorsport Porsche 996 GT3-R that he shares with Sascha Maassen, with just two-tenths of a second separating the top three in the class. Philipp Peter was fourth fastest with a time of 1m29.357s, while Antonio Garcia was fifth in the nr 76 RWS Motorsport Porsche 996 GT3-R that he will share with Horst Felbermayr Jnr.
Jurgen von Gartzen and Ian Khan missed the Super Pole in the nr 60 JvG.
Racing Porsche 996 GT3-R having changed engines shortly before the weekend.
"The engine that blew up in Sweden was re-built, but they didn't have time to put it on the dyno," said Kahn. "When we started it, there was water leaking into the oil so we sent it back and got a new one on Thursday night. I ran it for the first time in practice yesterday, and it was fine, but this morning we started it and it didn't run well." The team changed the spark plugs, and the electronic management system but could not trace the cause of the fault.
