Progress Confirmed in Race

Oschersleben, 19th September 2004 - The Lamborghini Murcielago driven by Piccini and Deletraz gave an impressive performance in the first 2 hours of today's race but was stopped by a broken driveshaft.

The race started in wet conditions which Piccini and Gabbiani were competitive in. Piccini quickly moved up to 11th place when the team decided to stop him to fit slick tires. Back in 19th place after the stop, Andrea did a fantastic stint, among the 5 quickest cars on track. When the Team decided to pit (safety car), car number 24 had just entered the top 8. The progression of the car in the classification continued with Deletraz at the wheel. "At this moment we were in 6th position", explained Eric Boullier, Technical Director of DAMS "As the 2 cars in front were only 15 seconds ahead we had modified our strategy in order to save some time in the pit stop, we decided to change only the rear tyres and to reduce the amount of fuel put in the car, it should have made the difference and put the car in 4th place. But instead the driveshaft broke at this moment and the car was out of the race."

The car of Gabbiani and Ortiz finished the race in 18th position, which does not reflect the performance of Gabbiani who managed to set very good lap times. But the 2 drivers could not drive with the consistency they expected and a puncture cost to them precious time.

We feel we have reduced the gap behind the leaders this weekend and the cars gave significant signs of progress. Eric Boullier "We have still a lot to do and the Team remains focussed on the development the Murcielago."
