6TH AND 11TH FOR MARC VDS FORDS AT NAVARRA
The Ford GTs driven by Leinders-Martin and Palttala-Bobbi finished the Spanish round of the FIA GT1 World Championship, on the Navarra circuit, in sixth and eleventh. In the morning Bas Leinders and Maxime Martin had conquered a podium finish in 3rd in the qualifying race. Both very encouraging results for the Marc VDS Racing Team.
Sunday had started well for the Marc VDS Racing Team: the Ford GT #40 of Martin-Leinders had finished the qualifying race in third, while the #41 of Bobbi-Palttala, which had started the race form the last row after a driveshaft problem during qualifying, climbed through the field to 12th. Good signs for the championship race, the Belgian team thought.
But those expectations were only partially fulfilled during the main race: the driver pairings of the Marc VDS Racing Team had to be satisfied with sixth and eleventh. "We are a bit disappointed, I admit, because our performances during qualifying and on Sunday morning were very encouraging. But we shouldn't be too sad: our set-up was not ideal, which caused a high tire degradation, and our results are not that bad, since we score points in both races", Bas Leinders stated.
The Belgian had finished the championship race, after teammate Maxime Martin was caught up in the frantic pushing and shoving of the first lap. "I was squeezed in-between two other cars", Martin said. "But at the end of the first lap - during which I could have lost it all - I was still in third. Eventually I passed the car to Bas in fourth." The former F1 driver had to manage the worn tires during the closing stages of the race and was spun round in the penultimate lap by another competitor. Eventually the chequered flag was taken in sixth.
The other car of the team, which had started the race in 12th, briefly occupied eighth spot, before finishing the race just outside the points. A very encouraging start for the newly formed pairing of Markus Palttala and Matteo Bobbi.
