RML Collect Point despite Misfortune
RML's sportscar team endured a frustrating race at Imola, Italy on Sunday for Round 8 of the FIA GT Championship. The teams drivers Mike Newton, Tommy Erdos, Chris Goodwin and Miguel Ramos all had to battle with extreme heat as temperatures reached 39 degrees and despite incident and injury the team collected another championship point with an 8th place finish in class.
The No 7 Saleen of Tommy and Mike secured 6th place on the grid in qualifying with the No 8 Saleen of Chris and Miguel close behind in 9th. The team had achieved a good set-up on both cars during the practice and qualifying sessions and Sunday morning's warm-up saw Tommy set the fastest time on track.
A good start from Tommy in the No 7 Car saw him move up to 5th place on the first lap. With Chris at the wheel of the No 8 Car he also made a good start which was short lived as he was forced off track when two other cars made contact. The No 8 Car sped towards the barrier where the resulting impact caused enough damage to put an end to Chris and Miguel's race.
Tommy continued his first stint and had to make an early stop after a lock- up enforced a tyre change. The team took the opportunity to re-fuel at the stop but rejoining the race Tommy began to experience back pain. An injury sustained earlier in the week, which he had recovered from, seemed to be agitated by the G-force and vibration and he soon had to pit for Mike to take over.
Mike rejoined and achieved a good race pace in the high temperatures. He drove a solid trouble free stint and despite the punishing heat in the cockpit ran to his scheduled stop where a recovered Tommy had been given the all clear to get back in the car. Taking to the track for the final stint Tommy managed to take the No 7 Saleen from 11th in class to an 8th place classification at the chequered flag and despite all the frustrations the team were pleased to pick up another point.
Round 9 takes place at Oschersleben, Germany on Sunday 19th September.
