Best ever finish for Derbyshire at Hockenheim

Jamie Derbyshire came away from the fourth round of the FIA GT Championship at Hockenheim, Germany, with his best ever finish in the international series. The locally-based driver, sharing with 2000 champion Jamie Campbell-Walter, finished in fourth place after an eventful race in their Spirit Volkswagen-supported 500bhp Lister Storm, and moved to 12th position in the drivers' table.

"I put in an hour-long stint behind the wheel, and returned consistent lap times," said Derbyshire. "There was absolutely no drop-off in performance and I was able to drive for the full hour, the first time I have done so this season. The fuel consumption here is very high so we had to be careful, but I am absolutely delighted to have finished this race.

"I have made a real step forward this weekend, getting plenty of time in the car. If we can keep this up for the rest of the season, I think I can continue making great strides forward and be contending for the podium at the end of the season. We weren't far off it today, it is a great result for us."

The Spirit VW-adorned Storm was reliable throughout a tough race in which many of their competitors fell by the wayside. The Saleen S7R of Uwe Alzen and Michael Bartels retired while leading when a starter motor broke, and the Ferrari 575 of Fabio Babini and Philipp Peter was delayed when the Italian had a puncture and pitted almost within sight of the flag.

That left the way open for the BMS Scuderia Italia team to finish first, second and third in their Ferrari 550 Maranellos, with Campbell-Walter crossing the line just 13 seconds behind in fourth.
