Oliver Gavin Weighs In At Silverstone Supercar Weekend
In qualifying today for the second round of the FIA GT1 World Championship at Silverstone, Northamptonshire, Oliver took to the track for the first of the three qualifying sessions on a dry but cool track. On only his second flying lap, he placed the Mad Croc Racing Corvette in second place in the provisional grid classification with a time of 1:59.861. He then came back into the pits and sat out the remainder of Q1. His time was impressive considering that, following the new performance balancing measures taken by the organisers, the Corvettes are now carrying 90kg more weight in the car than the Aston Martins and it was Stefan Mucke's Young Driver Aston which pipped him to the top slot.
"I came in to save the tyres for the race as we only get four sets for the whole weekend," he explained. "The car was good although we still need to work on it a bit. We're searching for the right wing levels, ride heights, springs and so on, but I think with what we've got we've done well. Patrick [Selleslagh] has done a first class job with the tools he has at his disposal, as always, and there's a great spirit in the team."
Oliver's team mate, Pertti Kuismanen, took to the wheel for Q2 and posted his best time of the weekend so far in the SRT/DKR run C6.R. With far less experience than his British team mate, and only limited laps of the new Silverstone Arena track due to an engine problem yesterday, this placed the Finn in 16th place. Only the top eight go through to the third and final qualifying session, so the Mad Croc Racing Corvette will start in 16th place on the grid for today's one-hour qualifying race.
