FIA GT3 Monza: Erik Janis In Lead, Then Ran Out Of Fuel

Erik Janis and Jaromir Jirik had an uncommon reason for retirement in the third event of the European FIA GT3 in Monza. In both runs on the legendary circuit near Milan, their fuel tank ran dry. It happened close to finish both times. Janis was in the lead for quite some time in the first run; in both of them the duo could think about classified positions.

Janis started off run one. He made almost the perfect launch from second position on the grid. After a few laps he took over lead. Before drivers' change, his Lamborghini Gallardo GT3 of the Austrian s berg racing began to oversteer. That caused the young Czech driver flew out of the track; he managed to get back and give the wheel to Jirik in sixth position.

Jirik kept about the same position, but two laps before finish the car suddenly piped down. It ran out of fuel. The same thing happened in run two with Jirik starting off from 17th. He pushed forward and after the change in the cockpit the Gallardo was as high as 7th. But in the final lap, before the Parabolica corner, the tank was empty again. The Czech duo thus lost two classified position.

Erik Janis: "What can I say? It wasn't the mechanics' fault or anybody's from the team. We always had a full tank but at tracks like Monza, the consumption is always higher than normally. Other Gallardos had the same problem, so it obviously is a system, construction matter that needs to be sorted out. I hope nothing like this will happen in the next double race in Brno. Apart from that I was satisfied in Monza as I belonged to the faster drivers."
