For the 5th Round of the Fia GT championship 2003, Wieth Racing was able to start with the usual driver line up of Vittorio Zoboli, Wolfgnag Kaufmann and Team Principal Niko Wieth. Unfortunately Niko was not able to compete this weekend, because he was down with a heavy influenca.
Free Practice, Friday 27.06.03
Wieth Racing could absolve both sessions on Friday without any problems with their F550 GTS. 50 laps could be done overall. That was a great help for finding out more about the behaviour of the suspension system with different set ups. Especially during the rainy afternoon session Wolfgang showed up very surprised about the good performance on a wet track. This can be also seen by the lap times he achieved during heavy rain.
Qualifying I and II, Saturday 28.06.03
The first qualifying session was done by Wolfgang. at first go he was able to beat the Viper of Swedish Team Roos Optima. Better lap times were prevented by yellow flags during his fast laps. During the afternoon session no better grid position could be achieved.
Warm Up and Race, Sunday, 29.06.03
After a troublefree Warm Up, the complete team including drivers Wolfgang and Vittorio were very confident for a smooth race. Unfortunately all hopes were destroyed when Wolfgang reported a fading of the power steering after only a few laps. An unscheduled pit stop was unavoidable. During a quick check the mechanics realized a lot of oil in the trunk and it seemed like the power steering pump exploded. So it was quickly changed against another one. But this could not help to better the problem of the missing steering aid. So Wolfgang hat to visit the pit a second time. This time we realized a hair crack in one of the oil hoses that suplly the power pump, through which oil spread. After this was repaired Wolfgang and Vittorio were able to finish the race without problems. Regrettably the above mentioned repairs had cost so much time that the F550 GTS was not able to make 75% of the distance and so got an DNF.
Once again the Wieth 550 was stopped by an unpredictable problem, what was very painful especially after having such a troublefree weekend. At the moment the car is being checked and all possible sources of error are tried to be eliminated. The great challenge of the 24h of Spa are imminent and a final test during the next weeks will show if the F550 GTS is aimed for this marathon...
