Watsons Irish Points
Swansea based Tom Watson impressed mightily with a mature drive on his Irish rallying debut when the 18 year old brought his TRT Welding Services backed Ford Fiesta ST home fifth overall on last weekends Ulster Challenge Rally, collecting useful points toward his Kick Energy Fiesta Sporting Trophy campaign as well.
Tom, a motocross convert who only began rallying earlier this year, had struggled on his last two forays onto tarmac and was eager for a finish this time around. Along with experienced co-driver Ken Bowman, Tom agreed to treat the rally as a high speed recce rather than worrying about his times. The pair had a number of challenges to overcome, including a mammoth 12 hour pre event recce which allowed young Watson his first glimpse of the stages.
Changeable weather throughout the event saw a number of cars caught out on the high speed bumpy Irish lanes but through it all came the young Welshman. With his confidence growing stage by stage Tom set a string of top five stage times during the nine stage long rally and was pleased to return to Antrim with a good result under his belt.
This result is great as it has given me a lot of confidence in myself now. I know that there is so much more to come from my driving and with that in mind I'm really happy with my times. The Ulster has quite a reputation and now that I've been here I can see why -- there were holes in hedges, skid marks all over the place and more than a few battered cars in the scenery!
With each day counting as a standalone set of points this weekend elevates the rallying rookie into the lead of the juniors as well as second overall in Class RC3 in the British Rally Championship Challenge standings with just the Pickering based International Rally of Yorkshire still to go! The Todd's Leap Ulster Rally was also a round of the fiercely competitive Kick Energy Fiesta Sporting Trophy, and Tom was pleased to finish sixth in the one make series. With the series showdown also being the International Rally of Yorkshire Tom has a chance at nabbing sixth position on the final round!
