Daniel Barritt To Co-Drive For Steve Perez
Steve Perez, the reigning British Historic Rally Champion and driver of the Ford Focus WRC who currently is placed joint second in the Kumho Tyres ANCRO National Rally Championship, has agreed to have David Higgins' former co-driver and current American SCCA ProRally Champion co-driver Daniel Barritt join the VK Rally Team as co-driver for the remainder of the 2004 season.
Steve started the season contesting three championships, but with two different co-drivers in the shape of Somerset's Neil Dashfield and Yorkshireman Richard "Plug" Pulleyn, as neither of them was able to commit to all championships. Neil is contesting the Mitsubishi Challenge with Paul Wedgbury and Plug has business commitments, which would make both of them unavailable for all the rounds.
It was agreed that Steve needed consistency and both Neil and Plug offered to stand aside to allow 23 year old Barritt the opportunity to gain the experience in a WRC car on the BRC and ANCRO Championships.
Steve commented, "It's been great working with both Neil and Plug and our results on BTRDA and ANCRO have proved we have worked well together. But the team and I felt we needed the consistency of one co-driver and unfortunately neither was available for all the rounds but I would like to thank them for all their help. Daniel is one of the UK's top up and coming co-drivers this will give him the experience in a WRC car and me the constancy I need."
Neil Dashfield will still be contesting the Barbados Carnival Rally in the Group B Sport Audi Quattro with Steve Perez leading Perez to quip: "He couldn't get out of that one!"
Perez and Barritt's first event together will be next weekend's Pirelli International Rally based in Gateshead which constitutes round one of the Kwik Fit Pirelli British Rally Championship.
