Beebe does the triple on Jim Clark
Nuneaton personality Matt Beebe staged a massive giant killing performance on last weekends Jim Clark Memorial Rally, not only winning his class on this tough tarmac event for the third year in a row but also finishing an incredible ninth overall amongst the British Rally Championship runners!
Matt, who was forced to revert back to his ageing, but reliable MG ZR 160 for this event, after a deal to use a Citroen C2R2 fell through, was on fine form all weekend. Despite the conditions changing from stage to stage throughout the three day event Matt, co-driven by Welshman Gareth Roberts, pushed hard right from the beginning.
The m3motorsport run MG ran faultlessly for the majority of the event, and Matt took the class lead fairly early on by setting some truly competitive times. However the turning point in the rally was on the second run through Abbey St Bathans. Matt had lost the power steering on the stage before and had to struggle for the entire stage with no power assistance. Then, towards the end of the stage the cambelt began to work itself loose. Matt backed off but managed to finish the stage before using his mechanical skills to repair the car and head for service. With other R2 class drivers having suffered punctures in this test it would give Matt a health advantage for the rest of the event.
What a great result. This is my third visit to the Jim Clark Rally and my third class win! We came here with no expectations this weekend so this result is fantastic! When you consider how small our budget is, and the fact we don't have the chance to go testing between events, this makes our performance all the more special.
We knew we'd have to push hard to be on the pace and just ran our own rally in the hopes that others had problems, and were able to capitalize when they did.
The service technician will next be out in action on his home event, the Rally of the Midlands. Last year he upset the form book by beating the eventual winning Metro 6r4 through one of the Sunday stages in his little MG!
After that Matt will resume his British Rally championship duties with the Isle of Man International Rally. For this event he will get to experience luxury as he flies across business class, courtesy of new sponsor Eastern Airways.
