Yorkshire rally driver Jonny Milner was in unstoppable form as he dominated the Trackrod Rally Yorkshire from start to finish, lifting the crown of Pirelli British Rally Champion 2002 in the process.
An emotional Milner flew through his native North Yorkshire forests in the Team Dynamics Pro Rally Toyota Corolla WRC, with Welshman Nicky Beech on the pace notes.
Milner was crowned champion after just the second stage of the rally. Title rival Justin Dale blew his engine and retired, so Jonny was left to put on a great show for the rallying masses near his Huggate home.
Ever the showman, Milner even had time to play to the crowds at the Pickering Showground Spectator stage, as he completed a mid stage "donut" in front of his cheering fans. With over a minute in hand to second placed Julian Reynolds, the new champions were able to maintain a steady pace throughout the final loop of stages to record a massively popular local victory.
Previous wins on the Rally of Wales and the Scottish Rally were followed up with a string of gritty and determined performances on tarmac. The ever resilient Milner took the fight to the local asphalt aces and his efforts were duly rewarded with a bagful of points - enough to give him the chance of winning the title outright on the final round.
Speaking at the rally finish, a jubilant Milner was delighted with another fine weekend's work:
"This means everything to me. I'm absolutely delighted to be crowned champion on my home rally - as this is my first International victory on my local stages. The Team Dynamics Toyota never missed a beat, and the only decisions we needed to make were what Pirelli tyres to use. Thanks to them, we picked the right tyre for every stage. After Justin retired, it took the pressure off us and we thoroughly enjoyed an excellent event. I'm just so thrilled to be champion after thirteen long and hard years of trying.
The whole team around Nicky and myself have been superb this year. I couldn't ask for more. It was great to have the support of the local people in Yorkshire - so a big thanks to everyone who wished us well this year and this weekend!".
The new champions will contest the forthcoming Tempest Stages in the South of England - a round that counts towards the manufacturers championship, but not the drivers championship. The Team Dynamics duo of Milner and Beech will be looking to end their year on a high by taking another victory to round off a much deserved championship year.
