Jonasson joins Volkswagen team for Scotland
Swedish sensation Jorgen Jonasson will drive a Golf GTI 16V on the Scottish International Rally, giving the series-leading Volkswagen team a three-car presence on the June 6/7 event, round four of the Mobil 1 British Rally Championship.
Jonasson, 29 and from Umea, gave the Golf GTI its first international victory of this season, taking World 2-litre Cup honours on February's Swedish Rally.
In Scotland he will be at the wheel of a factory-built Golf GTI, alongside Sony, Revolution Wheels and Pirelli-backed examples for Volkswagen's regular duo, Finn Tapio Laukkanen and British Championship leader Alister McRae.
Announcing Jonasson's signing, Steve Bagnall of Volkswagen's UK rally partner team SBG Sport said: "We have traditionally gone very well in Scotland Tapio led the rally in both '95 and '96 and we are keen to strengthen the Volkswagen team further this year. Jorgen is an exceptional talent, as we saw on the Swedish Rally. He will drive the car used by Raimund Baumschlager on the RAC, and by Laukkanen when he took third place in Sweden."
Jonasson has been registered for the British series and will therefore be eligible to score valuable championship points for Volkswagen. His signing with the team is a one-off for the final gravel round of the British Championship, though Bagnall has not ruled out the possibility of a third Golf appearing on the twin tarmac events, the Ulster and Manx Internationals in August and September, with another driver on board.
Volkswagen's victory roll so far this year includes Jonasson's Swedish win and McRae's March double in the Rally of Wales and Rally of Portugal. Laukkanen placed second overall for the team in last month's Pirelli International.
Jonasson started rallying in 1991, was Group A Scandinavian Champion in 1995 and last year was runner-up in the Swedish 2-litre Championship -------- www.maxcom.demon.co.uk/vwrally.htm
