STAGE SNIPPETS...

* Nik Elsmore paid tribute to the late Rex Paddock, who prepared his car for many years and lost his life in a microlight accident last month, with a decal on his car claiming that his mentor was 'the son he never had and the son he never wanted...'

* Ripon driver Charlie Payne was a non starter when his Mitsubishi Lancer WRC suffered a transmission problem during the week in the run up to the event meaning he had to withdraw his entry.

* Paul Bird was celebrating his birthday on his local event and his TEGSport team provided a cake for the occasion. Some unscrupulous team member suggested it wasn't big enough to get all the candles on...

* Steve Perez turned up in some very dapper looking 1960's-esque white boots supplied by Malcolm Wilson, and his Ford Focus was sporting a new colour scheme in predominantly silver and electric blue to replicate one of the Kick Energy drinks cans....

* When questioned about his new hairstyle which resembled a skunk, Owen Murphy reckoned he fell asleep on the side of the road when the council was doing some white lining, hence the immaculate white stripe...

* Craig Drew, Nik Elsmore's co driver, was still sporting a cast on his left arm.

* Alan Cookson had the Army to thank for his finish. Being swallowed up by a cavernous Kielder ditch, he and Jules Wilkinson thought their rally was over after remaining there for twenty minutes, but Steve Partridge and Adam Entwistle stopped and towed 'Daisy' out of the ditch allowing the pair to continue albeit well down the order and within a minute of going OTL.

* Dan Barry attributed his lack of speed in a couple of stages due to his flu-like symptoms that he was suffering from.

* The second run through the Trinket stage was canned after Guy Wilks suffered a fire in the BRC event. Six following competitors stopped to help him douse the inferno, sadly without success, and with the local county fire brigade in attendance, the stage was cancelled.

* With the HPM team all hands on and changing a gearbox in less than twenty minutes, rally leader Marcus Dodd was consigned to the role of tyre man for both his and his father Harry's cars in service.

* Trevor Martin and Ray Cleghorn were making a welcome return to the ANCRO ranks but sadly, an under car fire ended their day early, luckily without too much damage.

* Alan Carmichael was out in a brand new car on the event.

* Steve Bannister was the only registered contender in the Mintex Two-Wheel Drive Championship and took an easy victory on his way to eighth overall along with co driver Louise Sutherland.

THEY SAID WHAT...?

"If Lemsips were a banned substance, he'd be thrown out of the country let alone the rally he's had so many..." The inimitable Martin Brady offers mitigation in defence of his driver Dan Barry, your honour...

"We need a win; I just keep cocking it up..." It's been a long time since Paul Bird topped the podium and once again, a mistake of schoolboy proportions cost him the chance again...

"God bless the Army and all who sail in her, those lads won't be buying a beer tonight...!" Alan Cookson plans on rewarding Her Majesty's finest by getting them blottoed out of their skulls for towing him out of a ditch...

"Not bad for a GBP135k car, now why doesn't someone hire it...?" Marcus Dodd saw off the expensive opposition again but still reckons he's not committed to a full title defence despite winning two events on the trot...

"If most drivers are carrying two spare tyres, I reckon I'm carrying four..." Comeback driver Neil Gatt was so unkind to co driver Andy Marchbank's expanding waistline that the gods transpired against him and he was an early retirement...

"I've spent many an hour in a Kielder ditch; I have no desire to do so today..." Steve Perez thought discretion was perhaps the better part of valour and decided that safe points were the order of the day...

"On one hand I'm disappointed I have retired, on the other, I'm glad I still have a car..." Trevor Martin puts things in perspective, especially in light of the unfortunate Guy Wilks...

"I'll let you know in twenty minutes..." When questioned about whether the gearbox problems he was encountering could be fixed going into service, Simon Hughes stated the obvious really...

"I think I'll shave it off when I get home..." Owen Murphy thinks the new haircut may not be a good idea after all...

HUGHES VICTORIOUS ON TOUR OF CUMBRIA

Simon Hughes and co-driver Craig Parry recorded their first Evolution Challenge victory in round three of the 2009 series, the Pirelli Tour of Cumbria. After a rock damaged the casing they overcame gearbox problems to cross the line ahead of current championship leaders Daniel Barry/Martin Brady, with Nik Elsmore/Craig Drew finishing a spirited third.
