Sweet Success for Sykes on Pirelli Rally

Rallying ace Richard Sykes scored a sensational victory on last weekends Pirelli National Rally, the opening round of the 2008 Silverstone Tyres BRC Challenge, when he experienced a relatively trouble free day on board his G I Sykes backed Ford Fiesta to win by a comfortable margin.

Stourbridge resident Richard only test drove the new car for the first time on Thursday evening and just over 24 hours later was dominating his class in the depths of the infamous and unforgiving Kielder forest complex. Co-driven by Simon Taylor in the bio fuel powered Boroughbridge Marina supported Fiesta the pair were largely unchallenged as the rough and treacherous roads claimed a number of victims, including their nearest challenger, Neil Weaver.

Although the rally was also a round of the highly competitive Fiesta Challenge, which run on Pirelli Tyres, as opposed to the Silverstone control tyres that Richard is obliged to use, the self employed businessman tried hard not to compare times as he faced the task of driving at a conservative speed but still going quick enough to maintain a level of concentration. Despite this slightly reduced pace the Smile Spa Midland and Cambridge Diet supported pair still would have finished well inside the top 10 amongst the Fiestas.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself this weekend. This car is great, it's easy to drive and so reliable. The only issue we had all weekend was the paint on the transmission tunnel smoking slightly when it warmed up. The first two stages we were really cautious as I was just feeling my way into the car, and then after that we just drove our own rally and tried not to get embroiled in a battle with the other Fiestas... they are fighting a totally different championship.

With the tarmac based Jim Clark Rally next Richard has offered up a challenge to the other Fiestas to come across for the rally and help bolster the numbers of one of the best categories in the country.

With a fully funded drive on the Wales Rally GB, as well as all entry fees in to the British Rally Championship the year after, the Silverstone Tyres BRC Challenge offers one of the best prizes in British Rallying.
