ST. CLAIR, Mich. (August 7, 2000) - The CITGO-SUPERGARD Offshore Racing team accomplished their No. 1 goal in Michigan. They finished the race. Impressively enough, not only did they finish, but they finished first.

Prior to the race on the St. Clair River in Michigan, Navigator Tony Wiese commented, "We want to finish the race. I think we have finally worked out all the ‘gremlins’ in the boat. We not only want to finish, we want to be the first to finish."

The St. Clair River Classic got off to a late start, as Mother Nature played a huge factor. The fog was dense and for safety reasons, the helicopters were not able to take off until the weather would cooperate, thus delaying the event.

The 6.3 mile course was difficult, and the first race of the day saw as many as six boats barrel rolling into the cool blue water. Although there were some minor injuries to some crewmen, the most damage was caused to their boats.

"This course has tight turns. These guys are running too fast and hot into the corners, and they are loosing control," explained Nigel Hook. "We just want a safe race for our team, and all of our competitors."

Driver Steve David shared Nigel’s thoughts, and focused on the task at hand. "It's going to be challenging getting through the corners. It's going to require 100% concentration. We're ready for this- we need a win for this team and CITGO."

The CITGO-SUPERGARD Offshore Racing Team showed the crowd they were going to be a force to contend with as they took the lead at the start. They battled helm to helm with the Fountain USA.com boat for many miles. The CITGO-SUPERGARD Scarab took the lead from their competition when the Fountain ran into mechanical difficulties.

Nigel, Steve, and Tony lead for the rest of the event. The team put on an impressive showing for the crowd as they drove to victory.

The St. Clair River Classic will be televised on Speedvision on Sunday September 13, 2000 at 10:00 p.m. EST and again on September 17, 2000 at 4:00 p.m. EST. TNN will air the race on October 28, 2000 at 11:30 a.m. EST.
