David, Villwock, Theoret win Chevrolet Cup elimination heats
SEATTLE--Dave Villwock, Jean Theoret and the defending Seafair champion Steve David all won their respective elimination heats in the first day of racing Saturday afternoon for the 2008 Chevrolet Cup at Seafair ABRA unlimited hydroplane race on Lake Washington
Villwock (Auburn, Wash.), the fastest qualifier for the race, had the easiest run of the day. Starting from an outside lane, Villwock sat back at the start and then powered his Ellstrom Elam plus presents Amos W. Hoss boat easily past Greg Hopp (Snohomish, Wash.) in the Mirageboats.com and Brian Perkins' (Kent, Wash.) Spirit of Navy presents Miss Albert Lee for the win in heat 1 B. Villwock averaged 135.025 mph.
David (Lighthouse Pt. Fla.) in the Oh Boy! Oberto had the toughest draw in the first elimination heat. He had to hold off Jeff Bernard (Gig Harbor, Wash.) in the U-5 Formulaboats.com. Jimmy King (Wales, Mich.) in the Hoss Mortage Investors Too also was in the thick of the battle but blew an engine going through turn three of the first lap. King's problems have forced his team to withdraw from the event. David had the fastest speed of the day, averaging 144.119 mph.
Jean Theoret (Montreal, Que.) finished the afternoon of racing with a deck-to-deck battle for all three laps with David Bryant (Mesa, Ariz.) in the Hoss Mortgage Investors. Theoret had the inside lane in the Miss Beacon Plumbing and was able to hold off the hard charging Bryant. Theoret averaged 142.953 for the heat while Bryant went 141.481.
The boats return to the water Sunday for two more sets of elimination heats starting at 10:45 a.m. with a 4:45 p.m. winner take all final.
