POWERBOAT P1 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2010 SEASON
The Powerboat P1 World Championship announced the 2010 season provisional calendar to "Make a commitment to allow sufficient planning time for teams, manufacturers, sponsors, broadcasters, host cities and the marine industry," said Powerboat P1 Chairman and CEO, Asif Rangoonwala.
The 2010 Championship will open in April, a month earlier than the traditional May start date, with the opening Grand Prix of the Sea in Split, Croatia, one of the Adriatic's most spectacular locations. The event was scheduled in Powerboat P1 goes to Croatia conjunction with the 12th Split Boat Show, April 16-18. "This will be one of the finest events on the P1 calendar and the opportunity to partner with the boat show will give us the ideal opportunity to showcase the sport to a targeted audience," says Powerboat P1 Commercial Director, Robert Wicks.
Rangoonwala is particularly enthused about the possibility, "This is the first time we have ever staged a race alongside an international boat show, so it's going to be a celebration for the marine industry. Some 50,000 visitors from around Europe came to the show in 2009 and I can promise they won't go home disappointed in 2010. I'm thrilled to bring Powerboat P1 to a new market that meets our demanding venue selection criteria and expands our footprint beyond its central European base."
P1 Management is in the final stages of negotiations with three potential host cities for the second event on the 2010 calendar, scheduled for late May and a decision will be made shortly. "It's great to see the enhanced levels of interest in Powerboat P1 from a diverse array of potential host cities," added Wicks.
The third Grand Prix event revisits Istanbul,Turkey in June following the success of the 2009 event which took to the spectacular Bosphorus Strait for the first time in its history.
A welcomed return to Portugal follows in July at the popular resort town of Cascais. Portugal has previously hosted World Championship events and is a favorite for many P1 pilots. Plans include an extended waterfront festival to add greater levels of spectator entertainment,
The Championship will return to Sweden in early August and Sicily in mid-September and negotiations are underway for a possible seventh Grand Prix of the Sea in October. "We believe the 2010 provisional calendar gives the series a stable foundation for all our stakeholders in years to come and this will be boosted next year by the variety and geographical reach of Powerboat P1," concluded Rangoonwala.
