Austin, TX (June 4, 2001) --- Persistent winds on Saturday and rain yesterday forced the cancellation of the Creve Coeur Classic, an IHBA Division III event, in St. Louis on Sunday afternoon. The event was also co-sanctioned by the St. Louis Drag Boat Association (SLDBA).
During Saturday's qualifying session windy conditions kept all the top classes off the water due to concerns for driver safety. IHBA officials were able to qualify all the lower classes but the top four quickest and fastest classes Pro Mod, Top Alcohol Flat, Top Alcohol Hydro and Top Fuel Hydro were unable to compete. The low elapsed times and high mph generated by these racers would have put the drivers at risk under the windy conditions present so IHBA officials met, and decided to cancel the qualifying sessions.
On Sunday, racing started at the scheduled time and the first rounds of Pro Mod, Pro Eliminator, and Top Eliminator were run before a major storm cell moved into the area bringing with it rain that forced IHBA officials to put all racing activities on hold. Officials held the race from noon until 2:30 p.m. hoping for a break in the weather but after examining weather reports provided by local aviation officials they correctly concluded the weather would not improve for the rest of the day. The event was cancelled at this point and was not rescheduled.
