May 21, 2001 (Austin, TX) --- The sport of drag boat racing has come a long way since the early days of the 50's and 60's and no where is that more evident than Red Bluff, California during the IHBA Nitro Nationals, May 25-27. This is the richest drag boat event in the country and crowds swell to record numbers every year. Top drivers in all the premier classes from Top Fuel Hydro, Top Alcohol Hydro, Top Alcohol Flat to Pro Mod will be vying for over $267, 000 in prize money and bonuses.
"This isn't just the richest drag boat race in the country, it is the richest drag boat race in the world. In addition to the IHBA contingency money and the cash purse we also offer bounties for breaking the mph records. There is $50,000 on the line for any Top Fuel Hydro racer who breaks the mph record by at least 2 percent and there are $10,000 bounties for both the Top Alcohol Hydro and Top Alcohol Flat classes if they break the mph record by 2 percent. We want to make sure the racers put on a great show and the way to do that is to put up a lot of money," said Ali Abbassi, event promoter.
This event is more than a drag boat race with special events all weekend during opening ceremonies and between rounds. A helicopter fly-by is planned prior to racing action, barefoot water-skiers will keep the fans on their toes, and the infamous party barge will once again shower the stands with t-shirts between rounds.
Tickets for the IHBA Nitro Nationals range in price from $20 to $50 and can be purchased online at www.rbdragboats.com. Kids 12 and under are free with a paying adult. Speedvision will televise the event on July 29th and August 5th (11:00 a.m. EST). Each show will be re-broadcast July 1st and July 8th at 3:30 p.m. EST, respectively.
