(August 12, 2001) Marble Falls, TX --- Fans were treated to a near perfect day of racing at the 10th annual IHBA Lakefest event in Marble Falls, Texas, today when Dwayne Patton of Visalia, California, set a new world ET record of 5.104 seconds in the Top Fuel Hydro final round on his way victory. Joining Patton in the winner's circle was Tim Stokes of Eufaula, Oklahoma in Top Alcohol Hydro, Don Ermshar of Riverside, California competing in Top Alcohol Flat, and Jim Parson, of Blanchard, Oklahoma in Pro Mod.
The highlight of the day was the final round showdown between Patton and Greg Tedesco of Reno, Nevada. Tedesco had the lead in the 2001 Top Fuel Hydro point standing and Patton was trying to back up his semi-final round time of 5.104 seconds for a new world record. Also on the line was a $20,000 Super Sonic Drive-In Bonus for Patton if he could set the record. As tension mounted Tedesco took off ahead of Patton and red-lit by .001 of a second. Patton had the automatic win but the record was still dangling in front of him. The two water rockets crossed the finish line side by side with Patton recording a time of 5.112 and backing up his record and collecting the largest payday in the history of the IHBA, over $32,000.
"This boat has been running good all weekend. We came here to win and we took home great prize. All the hard work has paid off. Greg (Tedesco) is a super competitor and I am glad we were able to race him and win in the final," said an excited Patton.
Greg Tedesco had nothing but rave reviews for the new world record holder, "Dwayne ran a super race. I'm just glad we ran as well as we did. This is really a tribute to my team."
In the Top Alcohol Hydro final Tim Stokes grabbed another victory and reeled in points leader Ted Faggart, of Porterville, California, along the way. Stokes defeated Faggart in the first round when Faggart veered off course and was disqualified. In the final Stokes had to overcome a great starting line reaction time by Round Rock, Texas', Daryl Ehrlich, to secure the win with a time of 5.506 seconds at 217.02 mph.
"This weekend worked out really well for us. We were able to gain some ground on Ted Faggart. A lot of this sport is luck but there is also a good bit of skill involved. This weekend we had both things working for us," said Stokes.
Californian Don Ermshar has been dancing around his first Top Alcohol Flat victory of 2001 a couple of time this season but today he put it all together. His road to victory was paved but a number of tough competitors including his brother, Jim, in the first round.
"This is pretty incredible. We made some headway in the points chase with this win so we are not out of it by any means. The crew did a great job and my wife, Phyllis, as always was the best. Everything is just coming together. The conditions this afternoon were just perfect for us and we are glad to get the win," said a relieved Ermshar.
The next IHBA national event will be the Mid America Summer Nationals in Chouteau, Oklahoma, August 25-26, 2001.
