(Tri-Cities, WA) - N. Mark Evans in the U-16 Miss E-Lam Plus won the Budweiser Columbia Cup with Wings, the fifth race of the Budweiser Unlimited Hydroplane Series, on Sunday at Tri-Cities, WA. The win marked the tenth Unlimited career victory for Evans and was the first for the Seattle-based Ellstrom Family, owners of the team. "This was a fantastic day for myself and the Ellstrom family," said Evans.
Coming off two heat victories at the Gold Cup in Detroit, Evans was looking forward to another successful race. He did not disappoint by winning two preliminary heats and was able to fend off a number of capable challengers in the final. This was the first time Evans has seen the victory stand since the 1998 Unlimited season.
George Stratton in the U-5 Lowrey's Beef Jerky presents Appian Jeronimo finished second and Nate Brown in the U-6 Oh Boy! Oberto Beef Jerky finished third. Fourth place went to Terry Troxell in the U-99 Miss Znetix2.
Hydros Ready to Battle for General Motors Cup at Seafair The Budweiser Unlimited Hydroplane Series makes its annual stop this weekend (August 4-6) at the General Motors Cup at Seafair at Seattle, WA. For the past 50 years, Seafair and Lake Washington have witnessed some of the best Unlimited hydroplane races in history.
Many drivers will feel the added pressure of attempting to race in front of friends and family on Lake Washington. As many as seven Unlimited drivers call the state of Washington home. "To win in Seattle in front of family, friends and fans of hydroplane racing would be terrific," said Dave Villwock, driver of Miss Budweiser. "The competition will be fierce as all the local drivers will want to win for their hometown. I have a feeling that this race will be the most competitive this year and thrilling for the fans."
Vintage Hydros Recreate 1960 Gold Cup
Just before the final heat of the General Motors Cup fans will turn back the clocks and watch six vintage hydros recreate the 1960 Gold Cup at the PEMCO Classic. The PEMCO Classic is fun, nostalgic and rooted in hydro history. These vintage hydros, all restored by the Hydroplane & Raceboat Museum, should attract some of the biggest cheers of the weekend.
