Steve David Leads Qualifying After First Day In Evansville

EVANSVILLE--A field of 10 boats are expected to vie for the Thunder on the Ohio title this weekend on the Ohio River, but only one driver has ever won this race.

Steve David (Lighthouse, Fla.) won the event in 2005 but this could be the first time in his 16 attempts at a title here in Evansville that he and his Oh Boy! Oberto team have ever been the top qualifier at this event.

David ran a high speed of 153.429 mph in the early afternoon qualifying session to top the seven boats that qualified on Friday.

Jean Theoret (Maple Grove, Quebec) was the second fastest boat, taking his Miss Beacon Plumbing to a speed of 151.777.

One more qualifying session will take place Saturday morning before the elimination heats start later in the afternoon. Racing continues with two sets of eliminations heats on Sunday with a winner take all final at 4:30 pm.
