Villwock Leads Qualifying For Gold Cup
DETROIT (AP)----Even though the Gold Cup normally ends up as a wild weekend with the unlimited hydroplanes, the first day of qualifying was pedestrian. In fact, Dave Villwock (Auburn, Wash.) made it look so easy as the lead qualifier for the third race in a row going 162.754 for a two-lap average, one would have thought the cantankerous Detroit River was taking the day off.
The perfect water conditions allowed Villwock to set a new Detroit River Gold Cup qualifying record since fuel flow restrictions were put in place in 2000. All nine teams qualified early and even though wind speed picked up in the late afternoon session, teams were still able to take the water and turn excellent speeds.
"The (Detroit) river is what it is," said Villwock. "It was a little windy and rough out there but it was definitely raceable."
Villwock, the winningest active driver in the sport, not only has taken the top qualifying spot in the last two races, he also won both races.
Jean Theoret (Ville de Lery, Quebec), the defending Gold Cup champion, was close behind with an average speed of 160.089 mph.
Elimination heats start Saturday at 11 a.m. with more eliminations heats Sunday before the winner-take-all final at 3:40 p.m. that afternoon.
