Mach 1 Motorsports Team Manager Bill Ferry Talks About THQ World Supercross GP Rider Heath Voss' Championship Run
AURORA, Ill. (April 20, 2004) - Mach 1 Motorsports rider Heath Voss is tied in THQ World Supercross GP points with Moto XXX Honda's Damon Huffman at 271 after Pontiac, Mich. Team Manager Bill Ferry talks about his rider's quest for the THQ World Supercross GP championship with only three races remaining.
Q: Now that THQ World Supercross GP is in its second season, how do you feel about having one of your riders in the championship hunt?
Ferry: I think it's a great opportunity for Heath to make some extra money. It will show that his hard work has paid off. He finished second in the series last season and really wanted to win the championship this season.
Q: So this season he had a really strong focus on winning the world championship?
Ferry: He was happy last year but this year he had his heart set on winning the THQ World Supercross GP.
Q: Right now he has finished in the number-one position in THQ World Supercross GP points three times compared to Damon Huffman's two, but he only has two second place finishes compared to Huffman's eight.
Ferry: Well, we had a little bit of some bad luck earlier this year. It took us a while to get his bike working the way he wanted to it to. We were a little late in the ball game in getting everything set the way he wanted. That is why he rode the two-stroke Yamaha in the first two races and then switched to the four stroke. Once we worked everything out, it has shown that he does have the skills to run up front. He is a strong, dedicated rider and it showed at Pontiac when he passed Huffman on the last lap. He has a horrible start and really charged hard.
Q: Being around Heath at the races, what has he said to you about the possibility of being the THQ World Supercross GP champion?
Ferry: We haven't discussed it much because we are focused on each race, individually. We come to each race to do our best and this just comes with being consistent.
Q: What would winning a THQ World Supercross GP championship mean to your team?
Ferry: I think it would be great for our team ... great for any team. Being able to say you are the world champion is a great accomplishments. The THQ World Supercross GP championship is just as important as the THQ AMA Supercross Series championship. This is a series we are going to compete in. I really wanted to have Ezra (Lusk) compete in Europe, but he wasn't 100% ready. My riders have contracts to compete in those rounds but if they are only 85%, I would rather have them heal up and get to that 100% mark.
