Motorcycle trials legend Dougie Lampkin visits India

Legendary motorcycle trials rider Dougie Lampkin visited India during the India Bike Week, to showcase his impressive skills last weekend.

Lampkin is almost synonymous with trials bike, having dominated this discipline of motorsport for nearly a decade.

The British rider has 12 FIM World Trials titles to his name, and has also been triumphant at Scottish Six Day Trials (SSDT) at nine occasions.

Lampkin has truly lived up to the reputation developed by his father Martin, who won the 1975 FIA Trials title.

“I got into motorcycle trials because of my family. My father won the world championship in 1975. I was born in 1976, so I followed my father,’’ Lampkin told exclusively to Motorsport.com.

“I started to ride motorcycles when I was three years old and moved on to small competition when I was nine years old,’’ he added.

‘Fantastic’ India experience

Lampkin said he has thoroughly enjoyed his first trip to India to complete some promotional work for personal sponsor Red Bull.

“It’s my first time here in India. I’ve come during the India Bike Week and it’s been fantastic so far,’’ he said.

“Now, we are going to make couple of days video for Red Bull, riding at exotic locations. We’ll also have a demonstration in a shopping mall.”

“So, more or less riding in or over anything around!”

Endurocross and Vertigo Combat

More recently, Lampkin has turned his attention to endurocross for leisure purposes. With less pressure on him, it’s an experience he has relished.

“Endurocross was for last four or five years with Red Bull. I was thinking about riding in a couple of competitions.”

“It was nice after riding for so many years in world trials championship with a lot of pressure on myself for winning championships and winning races.”

“Riding in endurocross was just for fun and really enjoyable,’’ he added.

Lampkin has played an instrumental role in the development of the Vertigo Combat bike from the ground up. And the 39-year-old recently won his ninth SSDT title on a bike he has designed himself.

“I’ve always been interested in development and working of a bike. So, when the opportunity came, we started from the beginning with the Vertigo Combat.

“It’s been great so far. In last two-and-a-half years, we’ve come a long way.

"We now have a world championship team. We started production for the sales. It’s a very very exciting project," he added.
