Aprilia Shines During First Practice in Iowa

NEWTON, Iowa -- Round 5 of the SunTrust MOTO-ST Series is underway as promoter practice began today at Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa. There was considerable parity among the top riders, and the level of intensity will only increase as the weekend progresses. In the Buell Motorsports Company SST class, the No. 6 Aprilia USA 2 team found themselves in a familiar position, sitting atop the charts and leading some fierce competition with Ty Howard's blazing lap time of 48.463 seconds (96.569 mph) around the 1.3 mile road course. Over a full second separated the leading bike from the second-fastest No. 46 San Jose BMW R1200 of Brian Parriott, who completed his fastest lap on his last lap with a time of 49.566 seconds (94.420 mph). Henry Wiles, the 22-year-old who will be running only the fourth road race of his career, completed the circuit on his No. 5 Aprilia USA 1 only slightly slower than Parriott with a lap time of 49.570 seconds (94.412 mph).

The BMW GST class was led by the No. 70 James Gang Racing Buell XB12 of Paul James and Jeff Johnson, which turned a lap time of 51.166 seconds (91.467 mph). Running second in GST with a time of 51.862 seconds (90.239 mph) was the No. 8 Richie Morris Racing Buell XB12 of Shawn Higbee and Dan Bilansky, a last-minute entry to the Iowa Speedway 500K and the winners of last weekend's Road America 500K. Following them, the No. 60 Team Ducati Indianapolis Ducati Multistrada 1000DS of Iowa locals Jeff Purk and Rob Oliva completed the circuit in 52.437 seconds (89.250 mph).

Lap times in the ST class were the closest of the three classes, with less than half of a second separating the top three bikes. The No. 9 Pair-A-Nines Kawasaki EX650 returns to the track with something to prove, after a mechanical failure ended their run in last week's event just over halfway through the race. Topping the ST class charts with a lap time of 51.111 seconds (91.565 mph), Jay Springsteen and Jimmy Filice continue to prove why they're a force to be reckoned with. Right behind them, the No. 16 RightsForBikers.com Suzuki SV650 of Robert Fisher and Nicole Hoffman ran a time of 51.339 seconds (91.159 mph), and the No. 87 SpeedWerks.com Suzuki SV650 of Brian Kcraget completed the top three with a time of 51.481 seconds (90.907 mph).

Official SunTrust MOTO-ST Series practice begins tomorrow at 3:30 p.m., with the start of the Iowa Speedway 500K scheduled for Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. Following this weekend, the teams will battle only once more, concluding with the 8 Hours At Daytona Finale, October 19-20 at Daytona International Speedway.
