RICHMOND, Va. (November 8, 2003) - The Richmond Coliseum hosted the final stop of the Vans Triple Crown of Freestyle Motocross, The Vans Championship of Freestyle Motocross presented by Mountain Dew and Xbox brought to you locally by Burcham Cycles. Heading into the weekend, Kenny Bartram and Nate Adams were tied to the Vans Championship.
Adams was the sixth rider out on Friday night, posting a score of a 94.0 in the first round earned the nights number one qualifier. Bartram, the eleventh rider in the first round scored a 93.6 and sat second behind Adams. Beau Bamburg back flipped his way into the third qualifying spot followed by Drake McElroy and Matt Buyten.
In the finals, Bamburg and his huge whip could not hold off Bartram and his three back flips. Bartram scored a 93.9, edged Bamburg's 93.2 to take over the Vans Hot Seat. Bartram's run was filled with back flips, but a few costly mistakes opened the door for Adams. Adams, the final rider of the night, pulled off the back flip heel clicker and put together a clean and technical run. Capitalizing on Bartram's mistakes, Adams scored a 94.7, enough to over take the Vans Hot Seat and move one step closer to his first Vans Triple Crown Championship.
"I didn't hit my landings, I over jumped them, I think I was too fast to the approaches, "Bartram said after Friday's competition. "I am not too mad, I can still win, but I have to throw everything I have tomorrow night."
In the first round of Saturday's competition, Adams was once again the nights' number one qualifier. Bartram's score of 93.9 was enough to secure the second qualifying spot with Bamburg, McElroy and Buyten rounding out the top five to mirror Friday nights qualifying positions.
Bartram again beat out Bamburg to take over the Vans Hot seat, scoring a 93.3 but again missing a golden opportunity. Bartram's run was perfect up until he missed a "Kiss of Death" on his second to last trick. Bartram finished up his run with a back flip to no-handed-lander bringing the crowd to its feet. Adams capitalized on the mistake, showing the crowd why he is the hottest current FMX rider competing. Adams never missed a beat, landing technical trick after technical trick, throwing back flip after back flip to take the win scoring a 93.9. Nate Adams is crowned 2003 Vans Triple Crown Champion in Richmond.
"I felt good tonight, I didn't really feel the pressure. I knew Kenny was going to bring everything he had and I was prepared," said Nate Adams after winning the Vans Triple Crown Championship.
