IFMA Freestyle Motocross leaves the Packed Alltel Arena crowd stunned.
Little Rock, AR., (January 18, 2003) - Friday - Matt Buyten inks his name in the International Freestyle Motocross Association record books and takes home his first IFMA Freestyle Motocross crown as the winner of the Friday night competition in Little Rock, Arkansas. The final round of Friday night competition "The Tomcat" Tommy Clowers seemed to be on pace to knock Matt off until on his last trick. Clowers quipped "I thought I was going to come up short and then I realized I wasn't and pulled the trick off the best I could." Jeff Tilton missed qualifying by one spot and looks to be back after suffering a broken collarbone in Europe. The key to Buyten's successful break through victory - He didn't make mistakes. Announcer Steve "Lurch" Scott summed up the excitement in the final round - "Matt winning is an amazing testament to how well he rode. He was the second rider out in the finals - his run had to stand up against all the other riders in the final." The final round Friday night in Little Rock had to be the longest of Matt Buyten's IFMA career. When it was over he had held on for his first win and got a special congratulations from his friends and fellow riders - Jake Windham hoisted him on his shoulders as Matt held his first IFMA Freestyle Motocross trophy above his head.
Saturday - Dustin Miller got his second win of 2003 and continued his tradition of giving his trophy away to one lucky fan. Matt Buyten ran well but was just a little off his performance of last night. Jeff Tilton brought the right stuff tonight making it into the final by showing off his signature "whip". Tommy Clowers also made the final but saw his chances slip through his fingers when his foot hit the seat trying to get back on the motorcycle after a "Nine-O'Clock Nac" style trick went wrong. The final round witnessed Derek Burlew warming in the hot seat rider after rider until Dustin "Scoot" Miller kicked him out. Derek's comment on watching as everyone else took their turn trying to knock him off the throne, "I am really starting to get nervous thinking I may have my first win." The crowd of over 9,000 excited Little Rock natives were on hand to see the freestyle action.
