Red Bull Road to Rookies Cup: AS Alexander, Aaron Gunawardena

The 16-year-old was declared the overall winner of the Indian version of Rookies Cup qualification, which was run alongside the Suzuki's one-make Gixxer Cup.

Choudhary claimed four podiums including two wins in the six races held in the season - the winner was decided not only on points, but the overall progress of a rider.

"Sachin [Choudhary] was a clear candidate in our view, as we watched his progress over the six races of Road to Rookies Cup," said Suresh Babu, National Head - Product Planning & Marketing, Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt. Ltd to Motorsport.com.

"Sachin paid a lot of attention during the Rookies Training Sessions which we conducted and we could see his effort, focus and dedication.

"All this clearly became visible in his improved lap timings over the races. And by the end of the Rookies Races, it was an obvious choice for us to select him for this privileged position," he added.

The Ahmedabad-based rider faced strong opposition from Sri Lanka's Aaron Gunawardena and also fellow countrymen AS Alexander and S Varoon, but overall had just enough to beat his rivals.

Speaking to Motorsport.com ahead of the finals, he said: "Every morning when I wake up, I cannot believe that I have been selected to go to Spain for the Rookies Cup Qualifying.

"But then the realisation dawns on me and then I focus on the goal ahead. A lot of expectations rest on my shoulders.

"I realise that I have a lot of hard work and determination ahead of me. I can’t wait for Spain and prove myself," he added.

Choudhary will fight against 116 riders as the selection event gets underway in Guadix, Spain on Tuesday with registration.

It will be followed by practice, trial runs and training on Wednesday, with the final session on Thursday to determine the finalists.

The riders will show their skills on the 125cc Metrakit bikes and based on their performance, the selection panel will shortlist the final list to compete in the 2017 season abode the KTM RC 250R Moto3 machinery.
