Laverty Increases Championship Lead
MonsterMob Ducati Supersport rider Michael Laverty increased his Championship lead in round five of the British Supersport Championship at a warm and sunny Mondello Park in Ireland today.
The 23 year old Toomebridge, Co Antrim rider qualified the 749 Ducati on the front row of the grid and proceeded to lead the race for the majority of laps until he slipped back into second place late in the race.
However, despite relinquishing the victory to Yamaha's Simon Andrews, Laverty came home ahead of main Championship rival Karl Harris to increase his lead to 5 points going into the next race at Thruxton in two weeks' time.
"I thought I had it in the bag and I took the race pace back a bit when I saw my pit board said I had a good lead as I thought it was enough to win the race. I tried to up the pace again but I didn't feel comfortable as I was sliding around a bit. Simon just reeled me in and passed me. I'm so disappointed but at least we've increased the Championship lead" said Laverty.
Meanwhile MonsterMob Ducati Superbike rider hope Sean Emmett recorded a pair of top seven placings aboard the 999 F04.
The Camberley rider recorded sixth in the first race and a seventh in leg two to end up in fifth place in the Championship.
"I went to get a good start in that second race and I got a good launch and it was just chaos at the first turn. Someone shot up the inside of me and ploughed into the pack, another rider went down and then someone else rammed me. I got going again and was going really good but then I ran off the track and lost three places but I managed to get them back and ended up in seventh. I just ended up in no man's land really and had to just consolidate some points" said Emmett.
Team owner Paul Bird had the following to say about the weekend:
"I'm chuffed to bits with Michael. It's excellent that he's increased his Championship lead. He's done a professional job for us and Ducati this weekend but I'm disappointed for him not to get the win at his home track. He did a great job to bring it home in second and not throw it away. Sean also did a professional job this weekend. We knew the circuit didn't suit the bike, from our experience with Shane Byrne here last year, but we did the best we could" said the Penrith businessman.
