South African, Alan van der Merwe scores two more championship victories
Alan van der Merwe just can't stop winning! The South African star romped home to record two sensational wins in the British Formula Three Championship at Oulton Park on Sunday, to extend his lead at the top of the series by 83 points from his team mate Jamie Green.
In both races, the Carlin Motorsport driver made perfect starts from second place on the grid to lead into the first corner. In the opening round, he brilliantly pulled out a large margin over his rivals very quickly and maintained the lead all the way to the chequered flag.
"This is perfect, I was pushing really hard in the first couple of laps to open a gap and it worked," said van der Merwe.
At the start of the 13th round of the British F3 championship the pole position driver stalled leaving an open door for Alan. The pack all jinked past the stalled car before being hit by Andrew Thompson (Hitech). That incident brought the safety car out, and it picked up leader van der Merwe.
"I was surprised that the safety car appeared, but after only a couple of laps it was in and I made a great restart, but I was nervous that it might have given those behind me another chance to attack," said Alan.
Alan's drive was faultless making no mistakes and comfortably raced home to win by a margin of three seconds after 17 laps. Behind him was a long procession of cars. "It's good to have a boring race while leading, because you pick up more points without hassle." Alan commented.
In the second race Alan was again performed his supreme best, launching himself into an instant lead at the first corner. Thereafter he lapped the 2.6-mile Oulton Park circuit faster than anyone else and extended his margin over Adam Carroll (Menu) to notch up his second win this weekend. Team boss Trevor Carlin was delighted, "He's done a fabulous job this weekend," he said. "He's the complete package."
Van der Merwe now leads the British F3 championship by a massive 83 points, as the series heads to Rockingham on August 3rd. "I didn't like Oulton Park before this weekend, but now I love it - I wish we could race here every weekend," beamed Alan.
Alan and the British Formula 3 Championship head to the Rockingham Motor Speedway for rounds 15 and 16 on the 2/3 August.
